The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires companies that file financial statements with them to follow GAAP or IFRS depending on whether they are U.S. issuers or foreign private issuers. Over time, the FASB has evaluated and to some extent aligned their standards with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) through a joint project or have decided to in other cases to not align them. This is the value of funds that shareholders have invested in the company. Cash (an asset) rises by $10M, and Share Capital (an equity account) rises by $10M, balancing out the balance sheet. Inventory includes amounts for raw materials, work-in-progress goods, and finished goods.

These distributors use their homegrown tech as a point of differentiation and a faster route to online channels in some lines. Because they often struggle to manage costs—for customer acquisition, for example—digital distributors are also adding products and acquiring balance-sheet capabilities to expand their presence along the value chain. By recognizing acquisition expenses before the premium income is fully earned, an insurance company is required to absorb those expenses in its policyholders’ surplus. This appears to reduce the surplus available at the inception of a policy to pay unexpected claims under that policy. In effect, surplus calculated this accounting system requires an insurer to have a larger safety margin in its policyholder surplus levels to be able to fulfill its obligation to those policyholders.

Similarly, liabilities are listed in the order of their priority for payment. In financial reporting, the terms “current” and “non-current” are synonymous with the terms “short-term” and “long-term,” respectively, and are used interchangeably. Generally, sales growth, whether rapid or slow, dictates a larger asset base—higher levels of inventory, receivables, and fixed assets (plant, property, and equipment). As a company’s assets grow, its liabilities and/or equity also tend to grow in order for its financial position to stay in balance. A bank statement is often used by parties outside of a company to gauge the company’s health.

Depending on the company, different parties may be responsible for preparing the balance sheet. For small privately-held businesses, the balance sheet might be prepared by the owner or by a company bookkeeper. For mid-size private firms, they might be prepared internally and then looked over by an external accountant. Each category consists of several smaller accounts that break down the specifics of a company’s finances.

Increased balance-sheet volatility

The company uses this account when it reports sales of goods, generally under cost of goods sold in the income statement. This account includes the balance of all sales revenue still on credit, net of any allowances for doubtful accounts (which generates a bad debt expense). As companies recover accounts receivables, this account decreases, and cash increases by the same amount. When you look at these categories, the most important is what the company invests. In order to maximize profit, insurance companies have to take the premium money they receive and earn the best return they can while still ensuring that money is available to pay claims when necessary. The general ledger account Accumulated Depreciation will have a credit balance that grows larger when the current period’s depreciation is recorded.

An insurance company’s annual financial statement is a lengthy and detailed document that shows all aspects of its business. In statutory accounting, the initial section includes a balance sheet, an income statement and a section known as the Capital and Surplus Account, which sets out the major components of policyholders’ surplus and changes in the account during the year. As with GAAP accounting, the balance sheet presents a picture of a company’s financial position at one moment in time—its assets and its liabilities—and the income statement provides a record of the company’s operating results from the previous period.

Some agencies operate for decades with no balance sheets, or poor ones, and then they go to sell and learn, painfully, that they have a serious problem. An agency cannot legitimately be sold without consideration of a quality balance sheet.
